Course Timetable and Classes

The beautiful Dýrafjörður is an important setting in Gísla Saga.
The beautiful Dýrafjörður is an important setting in Gísla Saga.
The following preliminary timetable gives you an idea of what each day will be like.

In the mornings from Monday to Thursday, you will be introduced to the Saga literature as well as to the history of the Icelandic language and the society of the Saga people. This will give you a good understanding of the topic. After a lunch break there will be a variety of classes and activities on Gísla Saga and in the context of Icelandic medieval culture. Although classical Icelandic will be your bread and butter you will not need to buy your bread in the viking-pronunciation - in fact, pronunciation is the only big difference between classical and modern Icelandic, and of course the vocabulary is slightly more modern today.

While the evenings are usually off for free time activities, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the one-man play Gísli Súrsson by actor Elfar Logi Hannesson on Wednesday afternoon and on Monday evening the movie "The Outlaw", which is based on Gísla Saga, will be screened. In addition to the one man play on Wednesday we will visit the sites of the Gisla Saga in Haukadalur to do some on-site reading of the respective texts while experiencing the great setting.

The last day of the course will be dedicated to a day trip to Geirþjófsfjörður, another Gisla Saga site, where you will do some on-site reading of Saga texts. Please note that hiking to Geirþjófsfjörður is a hike of 500m down to the fjord. The trip is included in the course fee. Use of bus or private car is dependent on the number of participants. The duration of the trip depends on the weather. Note that a return befor the evening flight from Ísafjörður can not be guaranteed so a flight on Saturday is recommended.

Please find here the preliminary schedule.

"Iceland is a place where the four elements seem to be engaged in a constant battle for dominance over the lives of its inhabitants. This provides an exciting, if sometimes demanding, backdrop to the CMM programme. It's hard to imagine an environment better suited to preparing students for the challenges of a career in natural resource management."

Alan Deverell, Great Britain, CMM student 2009-2010
