Námskeiðslýsing
Introduction to the concept of aquaculture and to the principles, approaches, and issues associated with sustainable management of aquaculture in different environments. The course will illustrate the scope of aquaculture; the biology of species in cultivation, technical aspects, and management and environmental measures. It will give a concise picture of the different species in aquaculture and the feasibility within the environments in which they are farmed, for example the effects of temperature, turbulence and weather conditions. Recent developments in technique will be discussed such as regulation of sexual maturation and growth, cage technology and use of cameras for monitoring behavior and general farming conditions. Environmental impacts will be categorized and defined in the context of contemporary environmental discussion. The course will give a concise overview of different techniques in environmental assessment, and terms such as biological diversity, sustainability and conservation values will be discussed.Hæfniviðmið
- Students will gain systematic understanding based on the most recent knowledge and research in the science of aquaculture. That includes choices of species, farming techniques and environmental issues.
- Students will be able to integrate different aspects of aquaculture and evaluate the feasibility of aquaculture in a different environment, with respect to choice of species, total production, environmental impact and protective measures.
- Students will be able to assess which factors are important for aquaculture in different locations, and plan and organize necessary research.
