Námskeiðslýsing
Introduction to the main principles, approaches and issues associated with fishing activities. In addition a briefer introduction to activities associated with the oil and gas production and mining activities in coastal and marine zones will be given. The course will illustrate the present stage of technology used in the marine environment with emphasis on the potentials, limitations, environmental impacts, and future development of marine technology.
Hæfniviðmið
Students will gain systematic understanding of present fishing technology, ability to describe it in details, and understand the technological reasons for problems such as overfishing and environmental impacts. Students will be able to collect and evaluate scientific information on fishing activities in costal and marine zones.Námsmat
To small papers, individual and group. Case study/paper.
Kennari
Einar Hreinsson is a Fisheries Scientist and lecturer in fishing technology at The University of Akureyri, Iceland. He also holds a position at the Marine Research Institute of Iceland, Ísafjörður branch, as a fisheries Scientist. Mr. Hreinsson has taught similar courses at The University of Akureyrir and at the United Nations University, Fisheries Training Program (UNFTP), in Reykjavík, Iceland.
His main ongoing projects are direct observation of pelagic trawls. Studies of enmeshing and escapement of capelin. Studies of sorting grids for the blue whiting pelagic fisheri and in general fish behaviour and pelagic trawls. Other porjects include studies of fish behaviour and experiments with new catching methods. Main reserch interest in general are fish behaviour and fish reactions to fishing gears.
