Integrated coastal and marine management

CMM01 Kjarnanámskeið 6 ECTS
Tímabil V36 - V38 01.09.08 - 19.09.08
Kennarar Rodrigo Menafra (umsjónamaður) og Sigríður Ólafsdóttir (kennari)

Námskeiðslýsing
The course will introduce the concepts, principles, approaches, processes and issues of integrated coastal management (ICM) through a review of ICM history and development within a global context, illustrating the complexity of economic, social and natural system interactions in coastal and marine environments. Country case studies will be presented and discussed. An overview of different management strategies, as well as the meaning of integration in the governing of natural resources, will be presented. Successes and failures of integrated coastal and ocean management will be discussed as well as ICM in the European Union. Students will participate in a three-day field trip where issues from the course will be assessed and discussed from different perspectives.
Hæfniviðmið
  • Students will gain an understanding of Integrated Coastal Management, including its history and the most recent developments in the field.
  • Students will understand the complexity of marine and coastal environments from a social, economic, and ecological perspective.
  • Students will be able to integrate different aspects of coastal zones in assessing threats, trends and issues.
  • In small-scale case studies, students will be able to assess problems and put forth solutions for the administration of coastal zones.
Námsmat
Students' final grade will be based on two large assignments/projects. The first, an individual written assignment, is a comparison of two countries' implementations of ICZM. The second, a group assignment, builds on a real case study. Students will analyse coastal zone resources and address social, economic and environmental considerations and values.

„Það áhugaverðasta við meistaranámið í haf- og strandsvæðastjórnun er sú breiða sýn sem það veitir á samfélög, umhverfi og sjálfbærni. Námsferð á skútu um Ísafjarðardjúp við upphaf námsins var ánægjuleg reynsla. Þetta hefur verið mikil vinna en áhugaverð og skemmtileg."
