After a long summer break, the first Lunch lecture this fall will be held on Friday September 16. Our guest, Sigríður Ólafsdóttir will talk about a European fisheries management project called EcoFishMan. Sigríður is currently working for the project on behalf of the University of Iceland, but is staying in Ísfjörður to teach a course at the CMM masters program. The lecture will be in English and will be held in the cafeteria of the University Centre at 12.10 PM.

The aim of the EcoFishMan project is to develop and contribute to implementation of a new integrated fisheries management system in Europe based on increased stakeholder involvement: An ecosystem-based sustainable management system under a precautionary framework that will define maximum acceptable negative impact, target elimination of discards and maintain economic and social viability. EcoFishMan is an interdisciplinary project which uses information based on ecological, sociological, economical and management factors. Thirteen institutions, companies and universities from eight different countries participate in the project, among which are the University of Tromsø and the University of Iceland. The allocated budget is 3,7 million Euros over three years whereof the EU allocates 3,0 million Euros.

Sigríður Ólafsdóttir is the former program director (2008-2009) for the Coastal and Marine Management masters program at the University Centre of the Westfjords. She earned a master's degree in Environmental Science from the University of Iceland and did pioneering work on the sustainability of coastal management and utilization in Iceland for her final thesis.
